The average price for gas took a major slide over the weekend, according to figures from AAA Mid-Atlantic.
The average for a gallon of regular no-lead slid 7 cents over the weekend, to $2.24, in the five-county Philadelphia area.
South Jersey's average also fell 7 cents, to $1.94. The national average was down 6 cents, to $2.09.
Diesel averages also declined over the weekend: down 8 cents, to $3.25, in the Philly area; down 5 cents, to $2.94, in South Jersey; and down 7 cents, to $2.97, at the national level.
There are 17 states with averages below $2 a gallon, the auto club said.
Meanwhile, oil prices fell below $56 a barrel today as news that Japan fell into a recession highlighted investor fears that a global economic slowdown will hurt crude demand.
