The Sensex gained further strength as traders covered their short positions after breaching its magical mark of 9,000. Oil&gas, realty, banking and metal stocks led the rally, while IT stocks traded in negative.
BSE Midcap and Smallcap index rose 0.65% and 0.23% respectively.
Indian stock market belled the day on a positive terrain after a fall of 3.81% on the previous working day. The 30-share index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 33.47 points, at 8,970.67 on Wednesday.
In the previous day session, the Sensex ended with a loss of 353.81 points, or 3.81%, while the NSE Nifty declined by 116.40 points, or 4.16%.
Currently, the 30-share index Sensex is trading up 260.75 points, or 2.92%, at 9,197.95, after touching a high of 9,236.27 and a low of 8,970.67. Meanwhile the broad based Nifty is trading higher by 74.05 points, or 2.76%, at 2,757.20, after hitting a high of 2,771.75 and a low of 2,682.75. (11.49 a.m.)
Overall market breadth is strong. Out of the total 2,135 stocks traded at BSE, 1,105 advanced, 948 declined while 82 remained unchanged.
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Sterlite Industries (India) (6.19%), Reliance Industries (6.12%), DLF (5.56%), HDFC Bank (5.34%), Mahindra & Mahindra (5.19%), and Grasim Industries (4.84%).
On the other hand, Satyam Computer Services (2.07%), Infosys Technologies (1.54%), and Wipro (0.22%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
