By Steve Goldstein

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Europe stocks in opening trade Wednesday failed to extend the prior day's late-session advance. U.S. stock futures also pointed to a weaker start, with the Dow industrials contract falling 90 points. The U.K. FTSE 100 fell 0.6% to 4,185 and the German DAX 30 lost 0.3% to 4,563, with decliners including Xstrata , which fell 5.8%, and Barclays , which dropped 4.2%. Of movers, Novartisrose 1.6% after the Swiss drugmaker outlined its research-and-development capabilities at a presentation and Experian shot up 8.3% as the credit-checking firm raised its estimate of annual savings and said third-quarter organic revenue is growing at the same rate as the first half.
