AP: Local gas prices drop more than 2 cents overnight

The average price of gasoline in the Upstate dropped a little more than a 2 cents a gallon overnight, according to AAA.

Motorists in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area today are paying an average price of $1.843 a gallon for regular unleaded gas, down from $1.865 on Wednesday. Gas in the metro area is significantly less than it was a month ago, when it was $2.733 and a year ago, when it was $2.911 a gallon.

Statewide average prices also declined to $1.885 today, down from $1.909 on the previous day. Elsewhere in the state’s metro areas, prices also dropped. Nationally, the average price of gas hit $2.02 today, down from $2.047 on Wednesday.

Crude oil prices are hovering slightly above $50 a barrel as fears grow of a global recession, cutting the demand for fuel.

U.S. light sweet crude fell $1.42 to $52.20 a barrel and Brent crude shed $1.13 to $50.59 in London.

The cost of oil is around two-thirds cheaper than it was in July, when crude oil hit a record above $147 a barrel.
