MW: European shares start lower; Rio Tinto shares plummet

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares declined on Tuesday, with investors taking a break after pushing shares sharply higher in the previous session. Miner Rio Tinto plummeted 30.6% after rival BHP Billiton said that it's offer for Rio Tinto isn't in the best interests of its shareholders. BHP Billiton shares shot up 17.9%. The U.K. FTSE 100 index fell 1.4% to 4,094.50, the German DAX 30 index lost 1% to 4,506.49 and the French CAC-40 index declined 1.7% to 3,118.12.
