The U.S. dollar was lower against other major currencies in European trading Thursday morning. Gold rose.
The euro traded at $1.2943, up from $1.2899 late Wednesday in New York. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.2683.
Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Wednesday, included 95.31 Japanese yen, down from 95.73; 1.1968 Swiss francs, down from 1.2035; and 1.2257 Canadian dollars, down from 1.2271.
The British pound was quoted at $1.5489, up from $1.5350.
In midday New York trading, the dollar bought 95.53 yen and 1.2160 Swiss francs, while the pound was worth $1.5333.
Gold traded in London at $813.50 per troy ounce, up from $812.50 late Wednesday.
