MW: U.S. stocks open lower amid layoffs and dismal retail sales

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks sank at the start on Thursday after retailers reported disappointing sales results and companies including AT&T Inc. and DuPont Co. said they would slash thousands of employees. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ) fell 63.56 points to 8,528.13. The S&P 500 shed 8.29 points to 862.45, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 15.82 points to 1,476.56.
