Gold prices advanced Monday as the U.S. dollar weakened against other major currencies.
Gold for February delivery rose $16 to settle at $836.50 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Prices of other precious metals were mixed. March silver jumped 39 cents to $10.62 an ounce; March copper futures fell 2.35 cents to $1.4050 a pound.
Grain prices were mixed on the Chicago Board of Trade as a sell-off of crude oil late in the day put pressure on agriculture futures, especially soybeans.
March wheat futures rose 7 cents to $5.20 a bushel, and corn for March delivery rose 1.75 cents to $3.7525 a bushel. March soybeans fell 6.75 cents to $8.4950 a bushel.
