MUMBAI: Equities rose 1.47% on Tuesday, on expectations that the US Federal Reserve will cut rates later in the day, dealers said.
The benchmark 30-share Sensex closed at 9,976.98 up 144.59 points or 1.47%. The index touched an intra-day high of 10,006.39 and a low of 9790.31.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 3041.75, up 2.03%. The broader index hit a high of 3052.55 and a low of 2963.30.
BSE Midcap Index surged 79.14 points or 2.50% to close at 3,244.21 and BSE Smallcap Index rose 117.56 points and ended at 3,776.65.
Significant gains in ONGC (6.67%), Grasim Industries (5.14%), HDFC Bank (4.73%), Tata Motors (4.52%), ACC (4.38%) and NTPC (3.74%) propped up the Sensex.
