NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Oil futures traded below $40 a barrel Thursday, after tumbling 8% in the previous session. Crude for January delivery was down 12 cents to $39.94 a barrel in electronic trading on Globex. On Wednesday, crude futures hit their lowest level since July 2004 even though the OPEC oil cartel agreed on its biggest ever production cut.
