ET: Equities end lower on F&O expiry; banks buck trend

MUMBAI: Stocks ended on a weak note Wednesday amid a lacklustre session of trade on the last day of the December series F&O expiry. All

sectoral indices, barring banking stocks, closed lower with the realty sector leading declines.

Bank stocks bucked the weak trend as investors speculated falling bond yields and lower rates would accelerate loan growth and profitability.

Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex ended 0.91 per cent or 87.9 points at 9,598.85. The index touched a low of 9,502.53 from a high of 9,653.42 so far.

National Stock Exchange's Nifty was down 1.35 per cent or 39.95 points to 2928.70. The index swung in a range of 2968.00 and 2900.45.

Midcaps and smallcaps also took a beating. The BSE Midcap Index was down 0.81 per cent and the BSE Smallcap Index slipped 0.9 per cent.

Biggest Sensex losers were Tata Motors (-8.49%), Wipro (-5.19%), ACC (-4.46%), Tata Consultancy Services (-4.24%) and Mahindra &Mahindra (-4.22%).

ICICI Bank (3.1%), State Bank of India (1.98%), Ranbaxy Laboratories (1.22%) and HDFC Bank (1.19%) posted significant gains.

Market breadth on BSE remained weak with 1497 declines against 920 advances.
