MW: U.S. stocks sputter lower after year's first economic data
U.S. stocks erased opening gains on Friday as an attempt to shake off one of the most bruising years on record faltered after an index of manufacturing activity proved the weakest since June 1980. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.75 points to 8,774.64. The S&P 500 declined 2.74 points to 900.51. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.58 points to 1,574.45.
