Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 10292.54, up 334.32 points or 3.36 per cent. The index touched an intra-day high of 10306.17 and a low of 10069.11.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 3128.60, up 81.85 points or 2.69 per cent. The broader index touched an intra-day high of 3131.95 and low of 3056.45.
BSE Midcap Index closed 1.72 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index was up 1.13 per cent.
Biggest Sensex gainers were Sterlite Industries (10.93%), Tata Power (7.87%), Tata Steel (7.71%), ONGC (7.66%) and Jaiprakash Associates (7.27%).
Satyam Computer (-6.45%), Bharti Airtel (-2.81%), DLF (-2.45%), Hindustan Unilever (-1.43%) and NTPC (1.41%) were among the losers.
Investors lapped up shares of upstream oil companies after crude oil extended recent gains and traded above $47 a barrel, amid further tension in the Middle East. US crude for February delivery was trading up $1.18 a barrel at $47.52, but off an earlier high of $48.68.
Market breadth on BSE showed 1660 advances against 879 declines.
