Indian rupee improved positions in early trade against the dollar and gained a slender lead as the greenback pared early gains against some major currencies globally.
The partially convertible rupee was at 48.79/80 per dollar at 10.50 a.m, marginally above its previous close of 48.82/83.
Earlier, Indian shares opened 0.4 percent higher but quickly turned negative as mixed Asian markets and sluggish domestic demand kept investors wary.
