MY: Sensex ends higher led by realty, consumer goods
 
The Sensex ended the volatile session on a positive note led by realty, consumer goods and banking stocks while metal stocks edged lower.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap index rose 0.76% and 0.29% respectively.

Among the sectoral indices, BSE Realty gained the most. The counter soared 6.58% followed by Consumer goods rose 3.14% and Bankex moved up 1.16%, while Metal dropped 1.43%.

Indian stock market started the day on a flat note with positive bias. The 30-share index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 6.06 points, at 9,589.95 on Tuesday and fell into the negative to bounce back into the positive. It proceeded to trade on a firm note, touching a high of 9,724.87 led by realty and banking stocks. Later, it slipped into the negative on sustained selling seen across board and also due to weak opening of European market, touching a low of 9,510.50. However, the index moved up into the positive to close on a firm note.

The Sensex ended the day with a gain of 63.58 points, or 0.66% at 9,647.47 after touching a high of 9,724.87 and a low of 9,510.50. The broad-based NSE Nifty climbed 14.60 points, or 0.50% at 2,934.50 after hitting a high of 2,957.40 and a low of 2,891.75.



Major gainers in the 30-share index were DLF (9.05%), Reliance Capital (5.50%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (4.22%), Larsen & Toubro (3.40%), Mahindra & Mahindra (3.35%), and Reliance Communications (3.16%).

On the other hand, Reliance Energy (2.60%), Hindalco Industries (1.96%), Tata Motors (1.84%), NTPC (1.50%), ITC (1.42%), and Tata Steel (1.30%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Overall market breadth was positive. Out of the total 2,576 stocks traded at BSE, 1,387 advanced, 1,080 declined while 109 remained unchanged.
