MW: Europe stocks advance after Citi report; RBS, Natixis rise
European stocks started stronger Monday, following a report that the U.S. government will take an increased, but not total, stake in Citigroup. Prudential extended Friday's gains in opening action, rising over 5%, and Natixis rose 10% on news of a possible 1.5 billion euro fund from its soon-to-be-merged parents, Groupe Banque Populaire and Groupe Caisse d'Epargne. The Royal Bank of Scotland jumped 15% on reports it would break itself into a good and bad bank. The U.K. FTSE 100 rose 1.5% to 3,948, the German DAX added 1.6% to 4,080.69 and the French CAC 40 added 1.7% to 2,797.46.
