Indian equities opened negative today mirroring weak global cues. Intense selling was seen in Banking and Consumer Durables stocks. Meanwhile, marginal buying was witnessed in Auto stocks.
Major losers in the sectoral indices were BSE Bankex (1.33%), Consumer Durables (1.25%), IT (0.98%) and Metal (0.67%). On the other hand, BSE Auto (0.17%) was the only major sectoral gainer, in the 30-share index.
BSE Midcap and Smallcap also traded on a negative note down by 0.84% and 0.49%.
Asian stocks traded on a flat note. Japanese benchmark index Nikkei fell 0.10 points, to trade at 7,280.05. Meanwhile, China`s Shanghai Composite dropped 26.39 points, or 1.26%, to trade at 2,067.06. (10:02 a.m.)
European stocks also ended on a negative note. UK`s benchmark index FTSE 100 fell 204.26 points, or 5.33%, to end at 3,625.83. French benchmark index CAC 40 decreased 121.02 points, or 4.48%, to end at 2,581.46, while Germany`s benchmark index DAX declined 133.67 points, or 3.48%, to end at 3,710.07.
Currently, the 30-share index Sensex is trading down 72 points, or 0.84%, at 8,535.08, after touching a high of 8,619.09 and a low of 8,531.40. Meanwhile the broad based Nifty is trading lower by 13.35 points, or 0.50%, at 2,661.10, after hitting a high of 2,679.10 and a low of 2,654.35. (10.10 a.m.)
The 30-share index, BSE Sensex opened with a loss of 24.02 points, at 8,583.06. In the previous day session, the Sensex ended with a loss of 284.53 points, or 3.20%, while the NSE Nifty declined by 89.05 points, or 3.22%.
Overall market breadth was negative. Out of the total 1,071 shares traded at BSE, 317 advanced, 709 declined while 45 remained unchanged.
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Motors (1.48%), Grasim Industries (0.91%), Ranbaxy Laboratories (0.90%), Maruti Suzuki India (0.39%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.64%), and Hindustan Uniliver (0.16%).
On the other hand, HDFC Bank (2.68%), ICICI Bank (2.73%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (2.58%), and Tata Power (2.19%), were the major losers in the Sensex.
