COM: Rupee all set to get an identification symbol

NEW DELHI : India’s finance ministry on Wednesday invited designs from public that could gave its currency, the rupee an identification symbol like other major currencies across the world.
In a statement issued here the ministry said, "The government of India proposes to have a symbol for the Indian rupee to be selected through public competition".

The ministry also announced a prize money of Rs 2.5 lakh for the designer if his/her design is accepted.
The government wants a symbol for rupee as the major currencies in the world such as dollar, pound and the Yen have an identification symbol.
The symbol, the statement said, should represent the historical and cultural ethos of the country as widely accepted across the country and should be applicable to the standard keyboard.
The participants could send the entries to the Department of Economic Affairs, latest by April 15, it said, adding the design could be an individual project or a team project.
