MY: Markets choppy; Sensex down 14.78 pts
 
Markets traded flat amidst volatility. Sustained selling was witnessed in Consumer Durable stocks. Major gainers in the sectoral indices were BSE Metal (1.69%), Realty (0.21%) and Capital Good (0.40%). On the other hand, Consumer Durables (0.55%), Oil & Gas (0.32%) and IT (0.14%) were major losers in the 30-share index.

BSE Midcap traded up by 0.03% while BSE Smallcap traded lower by 0.22%.

Currently, the 30-share index Sensex is trading down 14.78 points, or 0.18%, at 8,412.51, after touching a high of 8,485.29 and a low of 8,376.28. Meanwhile the broad based Nifty is trading higher by 9.65 points, or 0.37%, at 2,631.65, after hitting a high of 2,642.00 and a low of 2,611.95. (11.00 a.m.)

The 30-share index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 45.96 points, at 8,473.25. In the previous day session, the Sensex settled with a loss of 179.79 points, or 2.09%, while the NSE Nifty declined by 52.60 points, or 1.97%.

Overall market breadth was negative. Out of the total 1,779 shares traded at BSE, 756 advanced, 942 declined while 81 remained unchanged.

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Hindalco Industries (3.22%), Sterlite Industries (India) (2.63%), ACC (2.47%), Tata Consultancy Services (2.21%), Grasim Industries (1.64%), and Ranbaxy Laboratories (1.43%).

On the other hand, Tata Power Company (1.99%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.68%), Bharti Airtel (1.08%), Reliance Industries (1.06%), and Infosys Technologies (0.71%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
