NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The dollar dipped slightly against major counterparts early Wednesday, after the ADP employment survey showed 697,000 jobs were lost in the private sector in February. The dollar index , which measures the U.S. unit against a basket of six major counterparts, stood at 89.166, compared with 89.60 in Asian trading hours, its highest level since April 2006. The dollar was little changed against the Japanese yen, trading at 99.34 yen compared with 99.33 in early trade. The ADP report points to nonfarm payrolls falling by 685,000, compared with the MarketWatch consensus of 640,000.
