Energy shares fell Thursday despite higher oil prices, as the sector succumbed to selling pressure in the broad market.
With the S&P 500 falling more than 0.5%, investors found little reason to move money into energy stocks.
The Amex Oil Index fell 0.6% to 815, pulled down by a 3% drop from Anadarko Petroleum The Amex Natural Gas Index fell 1% to 314, ahead of weekly supply data from the U.S. Department of Energy. XTO Energy fell 3% to $29.29 as a leading decliner in the group.
The Philadelphia Oil Service Index fell 0.8% to 115, with a 3% drop from Halliburton weighing on the gauge.
