The Sensex ended the day with a loss of 471.23 points, or 4.69% at 9,577.26 after touching a high of 9,902.35 and a low of 9,520.96. The broad-based NSE Nifty fell 124.20 points, or 4.00% at 2,984.45 after hitting a high of 3,110.20 and a low of 2,962.40.
NTPC, which rose 0.52% was the only biggest gainers in the 30-share index.
On the other hand, Tata Steel (12.48%), ICICI Bank (12.38%), Jaiprakash Associates (12.12%), Reliance Energy (11.55%), Hindalco Industries (9.63%), and Housing Development Finance Corporation (9.26%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Overall market breadth was sharply negative. Out of the total 2,469 stocks traded at BSE, 916 advanced, 1,457 declined while 96 remained unchanged.
