U.S. stocks sputtered lower after a mildly higher start on Friday as investors stepped back from strong April gains ahead of economic data including factory orders and a consumer sentiment index. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 11.23 points to 8,156.89. The S&P 500 declined fractionally to 872.43 and the Nasdaq Composite was flat at 1,717.28.
