Investors preferred to take a risk to invest their funds in the current stronger equity markets for quick gains by selling these precious metals, a dealer said.

A sharp rise in rupee against the US dollar also cast a shadow on the yellow metal as an investment bet.

In the local market, standard gold (99.5 purity) plunged by Rs 385 per ten grams to 14,440 from the last weekend's level of Rs 14,825.

Pure gold (99.9 purity) also dropped by Rs 380 to Rs 14,510 from previous close of Rs 14,890.

Silver ready (.999 fineness) slipped by Rs 425 per kilo to Rs 22,195 from Rs 22,620.
