MW: Dollar stays down after Chicago PMI drops

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar remained lower after a report on manufacturing in the Chicago area unexpectedly dropped this month. The dollar index , a measure of the greenback against a trade-weighted basket of six major currencies, slipped to 79.630, down from 80.648 in North American trading late Thursday. The euro traded at $1.4092 after hitting its highest level of the year, rising from $1.3923 late Thursday. The dollar was also under pressure from an earlier government report that revised its first quarter gross domestic product data, showing the economy didn't shrink as much as previously reported, but was not as much of an improvement as economists predicted. Still to come is national consumer sentiment data.
