MW: Dollar adds to gains after rise in jobless claims
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The dollar added to its gains against most other major rivals after data showed a rise in jobless claims. The dollar index (DXY 80.73, +0.18, +0.22%) , a measure of the greenback against a trade-weighted basket of major currencies, rose to 80.803 compared with 80.716 before the data. The British pound fell 1% to $1.6250 and the dollar rose 0.6% to 96.20 Japanese yen. The euro fell 0.1% to $1.3919. First-time claims for state unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly in the latest week, the Labor Department reported Thursday. The number of initial claims in the week ending June 20 rose 15,000 to 627,000. It's the highest level since mid-May.
