NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures reduced earlier gains Thursday after government data showed an unexpected rise in first-time claims for state unemployment benefits and the U.S. economy contracted at a violent 5.5% pace in the first quarter. August crude was last up 32 cents, or 0.5%, at $68.99 a barrel. It was up nearly 1% before the data.
