FX: Ringgit Ends Lower Against US Dollar

KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (Bernama) -- The ringgit closed lower on Monday against the US dollar as a political spat between China and the United States continued to grow over the yuan, dealers said.

Pressure is mounting in the United States to declare China a currency manipulator and impose trade sanctions, to which Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said, Beijing would retaliate.

At 5pm, the local unit was quoted at 3.3170/3200 to a dollar compared with last Friday's closing of 3.3020/3050.

A dealer said the concerns of market players over bailing out debt-ridden Greece, supported the greenback in strengthening further, against major currecies.

Today, the ringgit traded mostly weaker against other major currencies.

It fell against the Singapore dollar to 2.3688/3734 from 2.3653/3697 last Friday and also against the Japanese yen to 3.6636/6677 from 3.6486/6544 previously.

The ringgit also depreciated against the euro at 4.4922/4980 from last Friday's 4.4861/4905 but rose against the British pound to 4.9787/9857 from 4.9996/5.0051 previously.
