UPI: U.S. markets open lower

NEW YORK, March 22 (UPI) -- U.S. markets opened mixed Monday as investors sorted through the economic implications of landmark healthcare reform legislation.

President Barack Obama said the bill passed Sunday night by the House "proved that this government … still works for the people."

Investors, however, were concerned the bill could reduce profits at drug and insurance companies.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average lost 7.70 points, 0.07 percent, to 10,734.96. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 2.28 points, 0.2 percent, to 1,157.62. The Nasdaq composite index lost 0.02 percent, 0.47, to 2,373.94.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose 8/32 to yield 3.663 percent.

The euro slid to $1.3489 from Friday's $1.3537. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 89.97 yen from Friday's 90.56 yen.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index rose 0.75 percent, 80.69, to 10,824.72.
