LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares struggled for direction on the last day of the first quarter, with losses for miners offsetting gains for media firms. In the media sector, broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting (UK:BSY 600.00, +17.50, +3.01%) moved up 2.7% after a ruling on the U.K. pay-TV market by regulator Ofcom. Gartmore Group (UK:GRT 116.00, -53.00, -31.36%) shares were up 2.5%, with the firm taking back a small fraction of heavy losses made late the previous session when it suspended a fund manager. Overall, the U.K. FTSE 100 index rose 0.1% at 5,675.04, the German DAX index declined 0.1% to 6,138.12 and the French CAC-40 index traded flat at 3,986.09.
