The Sensex is trading in the negative but on a flat note. IT, teck and consumer durables moved up, while auto, banking and oil & gas traded lower. At 14.23., the Sensex was trading down 29.34 points or 0.16% at 17,823.66 with 22 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 23.35 points or 0.44% at 5,316.35 with 38 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a decline of 21.62 points or 0.12% at 17,831.38, while the broad based NSE Nifty began flat at 5,339.70.
Sensex Movers
ICICI Bank contributed fall of 28.04 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Housing Development Finance Corporation (21.24 points), Hero Honda Motors (12.59 points), Sterlite Industries (India) (9.44 points) and ITC (9.01 points).
However, Infosys Technologies contributed rise of 49.85 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (15.23 points), Wipro (6.57 points), Bharat Heavy Electricals (4.2 points) and Tata Steel (3.36 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Infosys Technologies (2.92%), Tata Consultancy Services (2.48%), Wipro (2.36%), Reliance Energy (1.25%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.76%), and Tata Steel (0.64%).
On the other hand, Hero Honda Motors (4.84%), Reliance Communications (2.50%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (2.27%), Sterlite Industries (India) (2.20%), ICICI Bank (1.97%), and Mahindra & Mahindra (1.55%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Midcap index was at 7064.58 down by 13.25 points or by 0.19%. The major losers were Alfa-Laval (India) (1.34%), Aban Offshore (0.93%), Core Projects and Technologies (0.79%), Reliance MediaWorks (0.51%) and Alstom Projects India (0.14%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Auto index was at 7,657.12, down by 92.26 points or by 1.19%. The major losers were Hero Honda Motors (4.84%), Escorts (2.61%), Amtek Auto (1.37%), Bharat Forge (0.46%) and Ashok Leyland (0.36%).
The Bankex index was at 10,730.96, down by 73.85 points or by 0.68%. The major losers were I C I C I Bank (1.97%), Allahabad Bank (0.91%), Bank Of India (0.87%), Federal Bank (0.72%) and H D F C Bank (0.42%).
The HC index was at 5,294.17, down by 25.38 points or by 0.48%. The major losers were Aurobindo Pharma (1.01%), Biocon (0.7%), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.56%), Divis Laboratories (0.38%) and Dishman Pharmaceuticals & Chemicals (0.07%).
On the other hand, the IT index was at 5,477.86, up by 138.78 points or by 2.60%. The major gainers were Infosys Technologies (2.92%), H C L Technologies (2.77%), Aptech (0.69%), Oracle Financial Services Software (0.68%) and Mphasis (0.47%).

Market breadth was negative with 1,341 advances against 1,510 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Infosys Technologies topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 4,143.22 million. It was followed by Tata Motors (Rs. 1,113.24 million), Tata Motors -DVR (Rs. 823.42 million) and Tata Consultancy Services (Rs. 683.08 million).
The volume chart was led by Cals Refineries with trades of over 29.16 million shares. It was followed by Birla Power Solutions (9.63 million), FCS Software Solutions (8.15 million) and Balaji Telefilms (4.72 million).
