Police and guards fired live ammunition at striking Gold One workers at the Modder East mine near Springs yesterday, said the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
"What happened today is similar to what happened on Wednesday, the police used live ammunition," said spokesman Lesiba Seshoka. The workers, striking over a living-out allowance, were "provoked" by mine guards who fired live ammunition.
"They injured one worker," NUM said. The police arrived shortly afterwards and also began shooting, according to the union.
The NUM reported the incident to local police. Gold One spokesman Ilja Graulich said he did not know about the police presence at the mine. - Sapa
