The JSE tumbled before close on Thursday in line with plunging world markets amid concerns about European debt woes.
The JSE's all share index plummeted 3.08 percent and closed at 26 337.510 points.
The gold mining index shed 0.27 percent, resources slumped 2.65 percent while the platinum mining index plunged 5.3 percent.
Banks and financials tumbled 4.66 percent and 3.28 percent respectively while industrials lost 3.4 percent.
Among gold counters, AngloGold Ashanti eased 1.32 percent to 314 rand while GoldFields lost 1.8 percent to 101.80 rand.
Resources giant, Anglo American pulled back 2.81 percent to 273.36 rand while rival BHP Billiton dropped 2.45 percent to 201.24 rand. Synthetics giant, Sasol retreated 2.53 percent to 273 rand.
Among platinum miners, Anglo Platinum plummeted 7.7 percent to 700 rand, Impala Platinum slumped 3.85 percent to 180 rand, Northam Platinum lost 3.3 percent to 44 rand, Aquarius plunged 11.43 percent to 37.20 rand while Lonmin dropped 4.68 percent at 179.21 rand.
Diversified miner African Rainbow pulled back 4.91 percent lower to 168.05 rand.
Kumba Iron Ore withdrew 3.61 percent to 306.51 rand.
Steel giant, Highveld Steel dropped 2.56 percent to 76 rand while Arcelormittal lost 4.91 percent to 77.50 rand.
Among industrials, brewer SABMiller earlier reported adjusted earnings per share of US 161.1 cents from the year ended March 2010, up 17 percent from 37.5 cents in 2009. This amounted to 100.6 pence, up 26 percent from a year ago and 1253.8 SA cents, up three percent from a year ago. Dividends per share were 17 percent higher at US68 cents from US58 cents a year ago. Lager volumes of 213 million hectolitres, were in line with the prior year on an organic basis. The group's share price tumbled 5.1 percent to 216.81 rand.
Among other industrials, Bidvest retreated 4.87 percent to 125 rand, TigerBrands dropped 1.92 percent to 173.60 rand while AECI withdrew 2.49 percent lower at 68.50 rand.
Financial services group, Old Mutual plc eased 2.33 percent to 12.60 rand, FirstRand tumbled five percent to 19 rand while RMB Holdings lost 4.85 percent to 32.73 rand.
Banking giant, Standard Bank slumped 5.32 percent to 104.15 rand, Nedbank retreated 2.31 percent to 135.11 rand while Absa dropped 3.26 percent at 128.7o rand.
