The euro has fallen to a new four-year low against the dollar after comments from French Prime Minister Francois Fillon suggested the weakening euro was "good news".
The euro fell more than a cent to $1.2019, before rising to $1.2063.
The euro has not fallen below $1.20 since March 2006.
Mr Fillon said he was not concerned by the current level of the euro and that he saw only "good news" in parity between the euro and the dollar.
However, the remarks were later clarified by saying the reference to "parity" was about the general evolution of the exchange rate between the two currencies.
The euro also fell to a record low against the Swiss franc of 1.3865 francs. Like the US dollar, the Swiss franc is also perceived as a relatively safe currency in times of economic uncertainty.
