BERLIN: The euro has climbed against the dollar after comments made by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke raised hopes about the global economy.
The euro rose to $1.2039 in early Thursday trading, up from the $1.1986 it bought in New York late the day before.
The euro has been under pressure in recent weeks on worries about Europe's growth prospects and the economic effects of deep cuts in government spending there.
Bernanke told the House Budget Committee on Wednesday that debt problems in Europe might only amount to a ``modest'' drag on the US economy if the financial markets can halt their slide.
In other trading, the British pound rose to $1.4567 from $1.4533, while the dollar slid to 91.04 Japanese yen from 91.15 yen.
