MW: Retail stocks fall as May sales unexpectedly drop

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Retail stocks fell Friday after May retail sales fell unexpectedly for the first time in eight months, raising worries about the resiliency of consumer spending. The S&P Retail Index (RLX 435.02, +12.77, +3.02%) fell 1.2% to 429.79. Among the decliners, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF 35.27, -0.66, -1.84%) dropped 2.2%. J.C. Penney Co. (JCP 25.80, -0.47, -1.79%) was down 2%. Macy's Inc. (M 21.00, -0.33, -1.55%) fell 1.7%.
