MW: U.S. markets turn lower
 
NEW YORK, June 16 (UPI) -- U.S. markets turned lower Wednesday after the Commerce Department said housing starts in May fell 10 percent compared to April.

Along with the sharp drop in housing starts, permits issued in May dropped 5.9 percent compared to the previous month, indicating housing starts will be slow for the summer construction season.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average lost 33.25 points, 0.32 percent, to 10,371.52. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 0.32 percent, 3.52 points, to 1,111.71. The Nasdaq composite index also fell 0.32 percent, 7.41 points, to 2,298.47.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose 9/32 to yield 3.277 percent.

The euro fell to $1.2318 from Tuesday's $1.2347. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 91.31 yen from Tuesday's 91.38 yen.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index rose 1.81 percent, 179.26, to 10,067.15.
