The JSE edged up into the black before close on Monday as traders remained cautious ahead of the both local and international data due later this week.
The JSE's all share index inched up 0.12 percent and closed at 27 289.720 points.
Resources added 0.69 percent while the platinum and gold mining indices rose 0.60 percent and 0.56 percent respectively.
Banks and financials shed 0.11 percent and 0.03 percent lower while industrials slipped 0.38 percent.
Resources heavyweight Anglo American lifted 1.50 percent to 288.06 rand while rival BHP Billiton climbed 0.75 cents to 214.25 rand. Synthetics giant Sasol inched up 90 cents to 283.50 rand.
Among gold counters, AngloGold Ashanti rose 15 cents to 337.00 rand, Goldfields collected 1.48 percent to 106.06 rand while Harmony added 31 cents to 80.06 rand.
Among other gold miners, RandGold's shares fell after the company continued its unbundling process. Trading in its shares had been suspended due to a long-standing dispute with JCI, with which it has reached a R950-million settlement that has enabled the unbundling. The group's share price plummeted 58.51 percent to 5.85 rand.
Junior gold miner Pan African Resources said it expected its full year earnings per share to be between 106 percent and 116 percent higher than those for the previous corresponding period when it reported earnings per share of 5.74 cents per share. Headline earnings for the year to end June 2010 is not expected to differ by more than 10 percent from the 12.28 cents a share reported for the financial year to end June 2009. The group's share price jumped 6.94 percent to 77 cents.
Among platinum miners, Anglo Platinum lifted 2.50 rand to 769.50 rand, Lonmin gained 1.70 rand to 176.87 rand while Impala Platinum rose 1.50 rand to 189.40 rand.
Among diversified miners, Exxaro eased 22 cents to 115.25 rand, however African Rainbow climbed 78 cents to 169.00 rand, Kumba shed 1.25 rand to 340.80 rand while Assore lifted 1.33 percent to 704.00 rand.
Among industrials, brewer SABMiller collected 48 cents to 225.48 rand, BAT added 99 cents to 243.80 rand however Barloworld dropped 1.98 percent to 42.00 rand.
Banking giant Standard Bank shed 50 cents to 104.00 rand however Nedbank lifted 98 cents to 127.00 rand.
