The euro is slightly higher against the dollar after a U.S. holiday got the trading week off to a quiet start.
The 16-nation euro bought $1.2583 in morning European trading Tuesday, up from $1.2533 a day earlier.
The euro, battered for months by worries about the European debt crisis, rose at the end of last week after a report showed that U.S. companies cut jobs last month. But analysts are doubtful as to whether the currency will be able to build more momentum.
In other trading, the British pound is barely changed -- edging up to $1.5182 from $1.5174. The dollar slipped to 87.77 Japanese yen from 87.94 yen.
U.S. markets were closed Monday for Independence Day.
