LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares lost ground in early trading on Wednesday, taking back some sharp gains made in the previous session. Miners, which led advancers on Tuesday, were the worst performers with Rio Tinto (UK:RIO 3,002, -47.50, -1.56%) shares down 2.3%. Irish construction firm CRH (UK:CRH 15.69, -1.36, -7.98%) fell 6.2% while department store retailer Marks & Spencer (UK:MKS 341.80, -10.90, -3.09%) lost 1.9% after both firms updated investors. Of the major benchmarks, the U.K. FTSE 100 index declined 1.1% to 4,910.23, the German DAX index lost 0.9% to 5,886.08 and the French CAC-40 index lost 1.3% to 3,377.40.
