IST: U.S. stocks modestly higher on commodities rally
NEW YORK, Jul. 7, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- U.S. stocks were modestly higher in early trading Wednesday, boosted by rallies in the commodities markets.
There was no major economic news scheduled for release on Wednesday and investors were still pressured by uncertainties about the economic recovery. However, gains in some commodities such as crude oil and copper futures provided a floor and helped lift stocks higher.
The Dow Jones industrial average snapped its longest losing streak after a volatile session on Tuesday, but the gains were mostly erased by a late-session sell-off, reflecting investors' lack of confidence and buying interests even though the market seemed oversold.
Global stocks broadly fell despite gains in Wall Street as a report showed that German factory orders unexpectedly fell in May, the first time in five months. The fall came as demand for goods from Europe's largest economy waned across the 16-nation euro region.
The Dow Jones industrial average added 17.49 points, or 0.18 percent, to 9,761.11. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 3.44 points, or 0.33 percent, to 1,031.50 and the Nasdaq was up 11.28 points, or 0.54 percent, to 2,105.16.
