MW: European shares advance in early trading

By Sarah Turner
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares rose in early trading on Tuesday, after Alcoa started the U.S. earnings season with a forecast-beating set of results. Helping the advance in Europe, shares of luxury retailer Burberry (UK:BRBY 789.50, 0.00, 0.00%) gained 1.3% after posting a rise in first-quarter sales. BP (UK:BP. 398.95, 0.00, 0.00%) (BP 36.76, +2.71, +7.96%) shares rose 2.7%, extending sharp gains from the previous session, as the oil giant said that it will start a test after installing a capping stack on the leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. The U.K. FTSE 100 index rose 0.4% to 5,187.01, the German DAX index climbed 0.1% to 6,082.42 and the French CAC-40 index rose 0.2% to 3,573.74.
