TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Asian equities markets erased early gains Tuesday, as a sell-off in Shanghai dragged down sentiment. Japan's Nikkei was down 0.5% and the broader Topix lost 0.6% in afternoon trading, while Australia's S&P ASX 200 was down 0.4%. South Korea's Kospi was wavering in and out of negative territory. Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.2%, pressured by Chinese shares as the Shanghai Composite tumbled 1.8%, following reports the government has no plans to ease property market policies. Surprisingly downbeat earnings from India's software services major Infosys Technologies Ltd. (INFY 63.02, +0.45, +0.72%) also damaged investors' optimism.
