MW: Australian shares make modest moves in early trade

TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Australian shares edged down early Tuesday morning, after posting declines in four of the last five sessions. The S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.1% to 4,435.20 following an intraday high of 4,438.90. Shares of Bluescope Steel (AU:BSL 2.34, -0.05, -2.09%) shed 1.3%, pulling back after gains in the last two sessions. But some metals-shares edged higher in the wake of gains in gold prices in New York. Shares of Newcrest Mining Ltd. (AU:NCM 35.25, +0.05, +0.14%) (NCMGF 31.15, +0.65, +2.13%) were up 0.8% and Lihir Gold Ltd. (AU:LGL 4.38, +0.02, +0.46%) (LIHRF 3.90, +0.09, +2.36%) tacked on 0.7%.
