SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Canadian stocks deepened losses Friday as declining commodities weighed on markets and the prior session's weak U.S. manufacturing and jobs reports compounded global economic recovery concerns. The S&P/TSX Composite Index (CA:$ISPTX 11,661, -49.07, -0.42%) dropped 55 points, or 0.5%, to 11,655. Gold and crude-oil futures retreated, pulling energy and materials stocks lower. Integrated energy giant Suncor Energy Inc. (CA:SU 32.44, -0.55, -1.67%) was off 1.8%, and copper miner First Quantum Minerals Inc. (CA:FM 59.50, -2.34, -3.78%) was down 2.9%.
