The 16-nation euro is up slightly against the U.S. dollar, adding to gains from the day before following new global banking regulations.
The euro bought $1.2877 in morning European trading on Tuesday, up from $1.2867 the night before in New York. The British pound is down to $1.5365 from $1.5408 in New York, while the dollar is down to 83.56 Japanese yen from 83.63 on Monday -- and close to the 15-year low of 83.35 yen hit last week.
The euro garnered support Monday after global banking regulators agreed over the weekend to raise capital requirements for lenders. Investors were relieved the new rules, which are designed to strengthen bank finances and rein in the excessive risk-taking that caused the financial crisis, would not be fully enforced until 2019.
