SYDNEY (MarketWatch) -- Australian shares edged lower on Monday, with investors pausing for breath after three straight weeks of gains. The S&P/ASX 200 index edged down 0.6% to 4,609.10. Miners were retreating, with gold producer Newcrest Mining (AU:NCM 41.26, -0.24, -0.58%) (NCMGY 38.76, +1.06, +2.81%) down 1.3%, while construction firm Leighton Holdings Ltd. (AU:LEI 33.34, -0.68, -1.10%) declined 1.7% after ACS (ES:ACS 36.09, 0.00, 0.00%) said it wasn't immediately planning to up its stake in the firm.
