MW: Dollar hits fresh 15-year low vs Japanese yen

By Deborah Levine
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar fell to a fresh 15-year low against the Japanese yen on Friday, and headed towards setting a new all-time low, as the greenback fell broadly after a U.S. payrolls report solidified expectations that the Federal Reserve would easy policy further. The dollar recently fell through the level which prompted Japanese officials last month to intervene in currency markets to stem the yen's gains."If the bank of Japan is not prepared to meaningfully increase money in the system through intervention, it's hard to imagine they can overpower " what the Fed will be doing, said Ron Leven, senior currency strategist at Morgan Stanley. Versus the Japanese yen, the dollar (USDYEN 81.8200, -0.4900, -0.5954%) fell as low as ¥81.70, compared with ¥82.39 late Thursday. The previous 15-year low was just over ¥82. If the greenback falls under ¥79.75, it will be the lowest since the currency was allowed to float around 1973.
