LONDON (MarketWatch) -- French oil giant Total SA (TOT 54.40, +0.85, +1.59%) (FR:FP 38.89, -0.18, -0.45%) said Friday its third-quarter net profit surged 47% to 2.8 billion euros ($3.9 billion) from the same period a year ago. Adjusted net profit rose 32% to 2.5 billion euros. Total said its hydrocarbon production rose to 2.34 million barrels of oil equivalent a day. Analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires expected adjusted net profit of 2.44 billion euros and average output of 2.32 million barrels of oil equivalent a day. The firm's results were boosted by higher oil and gas prices.
