MW: Dollar sheds gains as sentiment brightens

By Laura Mandaro
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar Wednesday reversed lower against the euro and a basket of currencies, but retained a small gain versus the yen, after the morning's U.S. economic data perked up sentiment about the U.S. economy, sapping demand for safe-haven assets. One euro bought $1.3398, up from $1.3364 late Tuesday and a retreat below $1.33 in European trading. The euro was under pressure earlier as investor dumped Spanish and Portuguese bonds on expectations Southern Europe will follow Ireland in seeking an international bailout. Pulling investors back into stocks and higher yielding currencies, the Labor Department early Wednesday said initial jobless claims fell to the lowest in more than two years.
